Thomas Hardy was born on 2 June 1840 at Higher Bockhampton near Dorchester,
Dorset UK. During his lifetime he wrote almost a thousand published poems and fourteen published novels including ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ and ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’. He died in Dorchester on 11 January 1928. His heart is buried in his home parish churchyard at Stinsford, Dorset; his ashes in Poet’s Corner, Westminster Abbey, London. Much of Thomas Hardy's work is set in an area he called ‘Wessex’. This area covers mainly the South and West of England. Here you can follow in both novelist and poet's footsteps. |

The Society began its life in 1968 in Dorchester. Today its two main
publications are ‘The Hardy Society Journal’ and ‘The Thomas Hardy Journal’
with academic papers by leading scholars, critical reviews, competitions,
comments and news. The Journals are sent free to members and have recently
featured articles on subjects as diverse as ‘Effie Neef Gifford Of Chicago’
by Martin Ray and ‘Hardy And Lawrence - And Their Mothers’ by Michael

webhost The Society engages in a range of cultural projects and presents academic and entertaining events. These include the biennial International Conference and Festival and, in each year, a programme of music, lectures, suppers, poetry readings, walks and tours. |
