Centenary of Thomas Hardy in Cornwall March 1913: 'A phantom of his own figuring'

Thursday 7th March

143rd anniversary of Hardy’s original arrival at St Juliot

7.00 pm Two course dinner at The Old Rectory £15 per head

Friday 8th March

10.30 am Meet at St Juliot Old Rectory for a seven-mile A Pair of Blue Eyes walk led by Sally Searle & Tony Fincham to Windy Beak, Beeny Cliff, The Cliff without a Name, descending to Boscastle (lunch stop) and returning up the Valency Valley to St Juliot Church. Some steep gradients.
7.00 pm Two course dinner at The Old Rectory £15 per head

8.30 pm THS welcome get-together in the Conservatory at the Old Rectory, St Juliot
8.45 pm A talk by Rebecca Welshman entitled 'Emma and the Mystery of the Gold Necklace'

Saturday 9th March

In the Conservatory at The Old Rectory (‘The Frozen Greenhouse’)
10.00 am Lecture by Dr Jane Thomas (Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Hull): ‘In Defence of Emma Hardy’
11 am Coffee Break
11.30 am Christopher Reid, (2009 Costa Book of the Year Prize winning poet): ‘Woman much missed’ - Elegiac Poetry
12.45 pm Lunch at the Old Rectory
2.00 pm Walk from The Old Rectory down the Valency Valley, ascending to Minster and then Lesnewth Church (‘The Young Churchwarden’) for a tea break – then back via Halamiling Farm to St Juliot. Four miles, led by Sally & Chris Searle.
7.30 pm Celebration Dinner at The Wellington Hotel, where Hardy stayed with his brother Henry in March 1913,
followed by poetry and prose readings.

Sunday 10th March

10 am Meet at Boscastle Harbour Car Park. 2 mile walk up the Valency Valley to St Juliot Church, led by Tony Fincham
11.30 am Mothering Sunday Morning Service at St Juliot Church. Revd Robert Thewsey, Rector of the Boscastle Group.
1.00 pm Carvery Lunch at the Cobweb Inn in Boscastle (pay at the time)
2.30 pm Meet at Tintagel Church for a 4 mile walk to Trebarwith Strand and back, led by Tony Fincham & Chris Searle.

Fee for THS Weekend – including Lunch & Dinner on the Saturday: £40 (£35 for members of the THS)

The Conservatory at The Rectory can accommodate 35 in total. If we exceed this, the Saturday morning activities will be held in Boscastle Village Hall.
